Order and Chaos (The Ordering of Chaos) 3

This is a series of six chromogenic prints that I printed in the darkroom for my mid-term. The series is made from two rolls we had to shoot as an exposure exercise at the beginning of the term (the teacher just wanted to make sure... Still though...) using a theme the teacher gave us. I got the theme ‘Order and Chaos’. So what I ended up settling on was the idea of imposing of order. I like the power dynamics thing. However, as you can see by the photo, it ended up becoming the ordering of chaos.

So, I went to shoot my two rolls at Canada’s oldest museum (perfect) and then printed each photo, taking the time to color balance, oh how I took the time, and them paint on the pattern you see, which is created by using old computer punch cards as stencils. (I couldn’t actually get any, and besides half the people I talked to didn’t even know what they were, even the people older than me. So I printed some out from google and cut out the holes myself) The idea was to get an idea of order to impose on the photos to keep with my idea of imposing order on the chaos (of the natural world) and I thought that a computer, one of the most logical and orderly human achievements was perfect to add on. At first I considered HTML or binary code, but I settled on something pictorial, and punch cards did it.

This is the door to the museum office. The whole museum, which is actually not so big, is made with this beautiful rich canadian soft wood. I don't which one, but some of it, like n the lecture hall (which unfortunately, I could not photograph) is hand carved and just so nice.
