Description

Anima Tumulta, treats the subject of mental illness, one I have always found fascinating in it’s complexities. I’ve never been affected personally by mental illness, however, it has always been of great interest for me, dragging me into many hours of study.
Creating this work, I felt fascinated, intrigued and somewhat saddened. The subject’s gnarly poses convey the sadness, making know the torment he is going through.
The photographs are presented on a flat, off-white background with a large border to allow space to reflect. Each photograph belongs to the series, but as with mental illness, represents it’s own episode. It is important to allow space to consider each photograph individually. The photographs are printed 12X12, large enough to create an absorbing picture, yet small enough to remain the private moment that a mental episode could be. The photographs don’t specifically represent Psychosis, but do demand the privacy of such an event.
My work is always inspired by what interests me, in this case mental illness. I wanted to explore mental illness in an artistic, rather than documentary fashion, although the series almost acts as a fictional record of one person’s illness.

This work reflects my interest in the psychiatric and mental realms and show a picture of it’s effects. The work soberly shows a single subject in a simple composition, yet often on a complex pattern, for in mental illness things are never as simple as they first appear.
I would like to further explore the mental realms in the future, perhaps with a documentary series, or maybe staying within the romanticized confines of my own imaginings.
